Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What kinds of services do you provide?

A: Here's a quick list of what we can help with:

  • Smart Switches, Lighting, and Power installation:

upgrading your existing fixtures and outlets with smart plugs, bulbs, switches, sensors, and in-wall outlets. We do not add or move electrical wiring.

  • Entertainment and media setups:

mounting TVs, installing LED light strips, configuring HDMI/IR/CEC, Sonos, AirPlay, Chromecast, etc.

  • Automated window treatments:

retrofitting shades and blinds with motors and app/voice control

  • Whole-home automation:

setting up routines, dashboards, and automations across Google, Alexa, HomeKit, SmartThings, and Home Assistant

  • Home network and legacy tech integration:

optimizing Wi-Fi coverage and connecting older devices to your smart ecosystem

  • And more!

Q: Are there any services you don't provide?

A: Yes, there are a few things outside our scope. True electrical work will be outsourced to a licensed electrician.

Some things we don’t handle ourselves:

  • Moving or installing new electrical outlets

  • Installing high-voltage systems (e.g., 240V EV chargers)

  • Modifying load-bearing structures for tech installs

  • Rewiring or modifying in-wall electrical systems

  • Installing new hardwired ceiling fans or light fixtures

  • Cutting into walls to add new junction boxes or wiring

  • Working inside breaker panels or adjusting circuit loads

Already have an electrician? Great!, I will provide detailed instructions to them on what prep work needs to get done before our service.

If not, we have a partnered electrician I can coordinate with to complete this work on your behalf. You will receive a separate invoice from the partner, electrician fees are not included in our pricing.

Q: Do you offer free consultations?

A: Yes! We're happy to do a quick call or visit to talk through your setup and goals. No pressure—just smart advice.

  • Note: if you need troubleshooting or technical support, please book a “Quick Fix” session. If I can’t solve the problem over a video call, then I will apply the "Quick Fix” session fee towards a follow-up in person appointment’s.

Q: How long does a typical install take?

A: Most projects are completed in just a few hours, depending on the scope. We’ll provide a clear timeline upfront so there are no surprises.

Q: Do I need to buy all new devices to get started?

A: Not at all. We specialize in making the most of what you already have, and filling in the gaps only where needed.

Q: Will my smart home setup be secure? Will you still have access after the work is done?

A: Client security and privacy are a top priority. Once setup is complete, we help you update all passwords and remove any temporary access we used. We don’t keep login credentials, and we never retain remote access unless explicitly requested. We also provide documentation so you’re in full control of your system. It's your home, we just help make it smarter, not less secure.

Q: Will I need to learn a bunch of new apps?

A: Nope. We work to consolidate your devices into a simple interface—whether that’s Google Home, Home Assistant, or another platform that fits your comfort level.

Q: Can I still use switches and remotes?

A: Absolutely. Smart homes should add convenience, not take it away. You can always keep physical controls. I find that a button is much easier to use than navigating the attention gauntlet that is opening your phone and finding an app!

Q: What if something stops working later?

A: We offer ongoing support and documentation so you know exactly how your setup works—and we’re just a call or email away if something needs tweaking.

Q: Can you help with tricky or unfinished setups from another installer?

A: Definitely. We've helped clients untangle confusing installs and get their smart home working the way it should. If you get stuck during a DIY project, there is no shame in calling in backup! (I’ve totally been there)

Q: What areas do you serve?

A: We work throughout the Triangle—including Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill, and Apex. Please contact us for details on additional travel fees for service outside the Triangle area.

Q: I’m a renter, can you still help with my Smart Home goals?

A: Yes! We have a variety of methods to hide cords and optimize solutions in non-destructive ways, perfect for clients who rent or own!

Q: Are your services insured and professional?

A: Yes, Triangle Smart Home Assistant LLC is fully insured, and we take pride in offering high-quality, reliable service with transparent pricing.
